Origami Peace Crane.

Children's Peace Monument.

Let no more children fall victim to an atomic bombing. This is our cry. This is our prayer. For building peace in the world. “ ~ Children's Peace Monument.

A little girl named Sadako Sasaki was 2 years old when a bomb was dropped in her town of Hiroshima on 6th August 1945. She developed leukemia 10 years later. Her Friend Chizuko Hamamoto told of the legend that when one folds 1000 cranes their wish will come true. Sadako then started folding cranes and wishing with each paper crane “let me get well”. Only 644 cranes were made before little Sadako died at age 12. Her school friends made the remaining 356 for her funeral. From then on, children around Japan wanted to make sure that no more children died from the result of war. 3,000 schools in Japan raised funds and built the Children's Peace Monument in Peace Memorial Park in 1958.
