The kings of Burma and Siam believed owning white elephants would ensure a prosperous kingdom and a long reign. If his white elephants died, it foretold disaster for the king and his kingdom. The Royal White Elephants were sacred and laws protected them from labour. The gift of a white elephant was both a blessing and a curse. As they were expensive to maintain and were prohibited from working. It is said that the kings would make such gifts to courtiers who had lost favour thereby ruining them. Giving rise to the term “white elephant,” meaning something that cannot be disposed of and whose cost outweighs its usefulness.
